"We had 3 very close families when I was growing up.  The Schrogins, the Goldbergs, and our family.  We spent almost every week-end together.  In the summer, we would meet at the beaches,  in the spring and the fall at various parks and in the winter, at our homes."

 My best,

As far as anyone could tell, Lester had a very fine last day.  For starters he got to see Miriam Helfgott, who had come to town to see him Sunday morning.  Technically she was his step-daughter, a relationship that started well into her adult life.  But in reality it was a relationship of great mutual fondness. Then Miriam, Lester and Dorothy (his sister-in-law with whom he has hung out for decades) headed out to our house, where we were having our July 4th BBQ, moved to the 10th due to our travel schedules. These past months he was delighted to get out whenever he could, especially if the purpose was something other than a doctor’s appointment. His grandchildren have long been a delight to him and this party featured Ari and Ben as well as Nicole and Rachel who both added to his delight. What more could he ask for?

A beer and a garlic dog, and he had both.  Around 6:00 PM he was feeling warm and headed into the house from where he had been sitting outside on the deck. Coming into the house he was having difficulty and by the time he got to the kitchen he made it clear he needed to sit, and immediately.  By the time he took the few remaining steps to the nearest chair, his knees were buckling and he slumped into the chair with a lot of help. He was clearly having trouble breathing and was not speaking. I called 911 and Ari carried him to the couch so he could lie down. He had a pulse but not much of one and was not clearly still breathing. The EMT’s arrived and started doing CPR and took him to the ER.

After some minutes in the ER they asked me (I had had to earlier produce my Health Care Power of Attorney) what to do. I asked them about the situation and the answer was that they had  been doing CPR for 30 minutes and during that time he had not taken a single breath on his own. So I granted them permission (their words, not mine) to stop.

We will sit shiva at 1132 W Lunt, Chicago on Tuesday from 2:00 PM to 8:00 with a service at 7:00 PM

On Sunday we have tentative plans for a memorial service at 1:00 PM at the SelfHelp Home, where he had been living the past 3 years. I will send out an email when that is finalized.

Ari took this picture minutes before his death.  The beer bottle was his; I don’t know who was drinking the Sprite.

9"There is good for the peacemakers, because they will be called children of God.  - Jesus

5:9 "These are the things of which a man eats their fruits in this age while the strength remains for him in the age to come: honoring father and mother, the practice of lovingkindness, and to bring peace between a man and his friend; but the study of the Torah is equal to all of them." (Tal. Pe’ah I.1)

25 I know that my redeemer[c] lives,
and that in the end he will stand on the earth.[d]
26 And after my skin has been destroyed,
   yet[e] in[f] my flesh I will see God;
27 I myself will see him

A JOKE ZADIE LIKED -

In Jerusalem, an English female journalist heard about an old rabbi who visited the Wailing Wall to pray, twice a day, everyday, for a long, long time.

In an effort to check out the story, she goes to the holy site and there he is!

She watches the bearded old man at prayer--and after about 45 minutes, when he turns to leave, she approaches him for an interview.

"I'm Jane Collins from the BBC, sir, how long have you been coming to the Wailing Wall and praying?" For about 50 years, he informs her.

"50 years! That's amazing! What do you pray for?"

"I pray for peace between the Jews and the Arabs. I pray for all the hatred to stop and I pray for all our children to grow up in safety and friendship."

"And how do you feel, sir, after doing this for 50 years?"

"Like I'm talking to a brick wall."
